Neu! Reekie! take racket for first trip to Ayrshire

Raucous avant garde art group Neu! Reekie! will make their first trip to Ayrshire on Saturday 19 May.

Fitting in perfectly with the irreverent and relaxed atmosphere at the National Trust for Scotland’s Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, they’ll bring live music, animation and poetry performance with a twist to Scotland’s newest literary museum.

The Edinburgh-based Neu!Reekie! have taken to the road before, but this is their first ever visit to the home of the bard. They do take inspiration from Scotland’s national poet and hosted a Burns birthday do in January which was a total sell out.

On the night, music will be provided by EMELLE who will perform a rowdy set of Burns’s songs. Forget what you know about the traditional arrangements – this is totally different. The band has recently recorded their sequel E.P. at Teapot Studios in Perthshire under Robin Evans who's responsible for recording The View. It promises both pop pounding choruses and exotic riffs. This is a band that have honed their sound and added an extra tier of musical dexterity, whilst retaining that ramshackle charm their followers demand. http://soundcloud.com/emelleband

Michael Pedersen will be performing new and selected works from his forthcoming collection The Ravens Still Stalk Me with an image showreel of bespoke illustrations. Michael is an electric performance poet and playwright with a long list of publications and festival credits. He’s also one of the head honchos of Neu! Reekie! creative circus (events, independent publishing and records) in Edinburgh. He's published two chapbooks (Poetry Book Society Listed, Callum MacDonald Memorial Award finalist 2010) and has a full length (illustrated) collection forthcoming. He collaborates and performs spoken word with visual artists and musicians with a recent BBC 6 Marc Riley appearance alongside Roy Moller (the band of which included The Wellgreen and Belle and Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson).

Kevin Cadwallender will be performing new and selected works from his picnic of poetry collections available. He was shortlisted for a Sony Award for his BBC Radio 4 programme 'Voyages'. His selected poems Dances with Vowels (Smokestack Books) was published Feb 2009. He is Scottish Editor for Red Squirrel Press, BBC Slam Poetry Runner-Up 2011, Scottish Slam Poetry Champion 2012 and and editor of Drey Magazine. Books include Baz Poems (Rebel Inc), Public (Iron), Baz Uber Alles (Dogeater) and Colouring in Guernica (Red Squirrel) and many more. http://www.stanzapoetry.org/2010/participant.php...

Museum Director Nat Edwards said:

“Neu!Reekie! are some of Scotland’s best and brightest creative folk. We are really excited to have them come to the museum and put on something that will be totally different and totally Burns. Burns was a young man, bursting with creativity and always searching for a new way of expressing himself and his ideals, just like these performers.”

Neu!Reekie! does Burns starts at 7.00pm on Saturday 19 May.
