RON BUTLIN
(with Jazz band-ers in tow - Dick Lee and Anne Evans)
with an international reputation as a prize-winning novelist, Ron Butlin is the mighty Edinburgh Makar (Poet Laureate). In 2009 he was made the first ever Honorary Writing fellow (together with Ian Rankin) at Edinburgh University. Much of his poetry, as well as many of his novels and short stories have been broadcast and translated into over ten languages. In addition to his plays for BBC radio and theatre (most recently Sweet Dreams for Oran Mor in Glasgow), he has written five operas, two of them for Scottish Opera. In this performance Ron reads from his latest collection The Magicians of Edinburgh (Polygon) - he's joined by (Lee and Evans) two highly accomplished musicians who've stitched a spellbinding score around Butlin's spoken verse. There'll be visual stuff happening here too.Wow.

Music from:

BMX BANDITS
are a Scottish 1960s-influenced guitar pop band who have been making music from 1986 to the present day. Headed up by the wonderfully charming Duglas T.(for Tiger) Stewart; they've shared members with other Bellshill bands such as Teenage Fanclub and The Soup Dragons. Formally one of Creation Records most effervescent bands, they also with a splash on Rough Trade, they were a most notable part of the massively influential C-86 NME compilation, but they've now firmly homed on Spanish label Elefant Records. In the early 1990s, when Nirvana was top of the tree, Kurt Cobain said ’If I could be in any other band, it would be BMX Bandits' - that quote kinda stuck. More recently there's been a fantastic documentary film made about Duglas and the band (Serious Drugs - The Film About BMX Bandits), which has been successffuly making the rounds on the international film festival circuit. Their latest album BMX Bandits in Space has recently launched and is as joyous and lustorus as any they've ever produced. More on this magical troupe here: http://elefant.com/bands/bmx-bandits

SCOTT HUTCHISON / FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Scott is head honcho of Frightened Rabbit - a Scottish indie rock band from Selkirk, formed in 2003. Their recent album Pedestrian Verse just surfaced on Atlantic Records and shot into the UK top ten. The band released their debut album Sing the Greys in May 2006 on local label, Hits The Fan. The band were offered a deal from Fiction Records but ultimately decided not to sign with the label. In January 2007, The Self-Starter Foundation brought the band to the east coast of the United States for a short tour. The band returned to the United States in March to play SXSW. Brighton indie label Fat Cat Records released a remixed/remastered version of the album in the USA in October 2007, distributed by Caroline Distribution. The band then embarked on a full American tour. The album was released in the UK in November 2007. They went on to release The Midnight Organ Fight (2008) and The Winter of Mixed Drinks (2010) to royally fervent reviews, played some slots alongside Death Cab for a Cutie, engaged in a fair shift of philanthropic endeavours and then (be fine fellows) unshackled a free EP - A Frightened Rabbit EP in 2011. There's heaps more but you'll have to undress that yerself - http://frightenedrabbit.com/.

ANIMATION SHOWCASE: stepping onto the satge is is Ainslie Henderson with his short I AM TOM MOODY; A surreal trip through the subconscious of a stifled musician as he struggles to sing. Tom Moody won Best Grad Film in Ottawa, and is nominated for Best Student film at the Annie Awards (Animations Oscars). Ainslie is an ECA graduate with BAFTA wins under his belt and a Grand Walt Disney Award and loads more. ALSO one of his character voices on the film is Mackenzie Crook! Here’s a trailer: https://vimeo.com/ainslie/iamtommoodytrailer

(shhhh: between you and I, Ainslie, in a previous life, was a contestant on BBC's FAME ACADEMY).
