Neu! Reekie #23 - Kicking Things Off at Summerhall

  • Summerhall 1 Summerhall Place Edinburgh, Scotland, EH9 1PL United Kingdom (map)

After 20 shows at SBT our avant-garde noise making is to relocate to the stunning home of Summerhall (host to Neu! Reekie! Records and oor mysterious Headquarters). The Line-Up:

Jenni Fagan - Seafiledroad (Andrew Eaton-Lewis)
- The Store Keys - The Sexual Objects

That means a newly curated space; and well there’s much more but we’ll keep our sleeves stuffed with tricks for now. Just make sure to get along while Michael Pedersen and Kevin Williamson play hos to:

JENNI FAGAN: Scottish poet and novelist - been down to London and back again - Blackheath Books to Random House. Her debut novel The Panopticon has just been published by William Heinemann, at Random House with rave reviews from The Scotsman, The Guardian and The Obsevrer alike (IRVINE WELSH: The best debut novel I have read this year). It is part of the Waterstones 11 — selected as one of the best worldwide debut novels of 2012. Jenni’s debut poetry collection Urchin Belle sold out on Blackheath Books. Her poetry collection The Dead Queen of Bohemia won 3AM Poetry Book of the Year and is available on Blackheath Books. Several poems from these collections were nominated for The Pushcart Prize.

SEAFILEDROAD: is Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Andrew Eaton-Lewis, also of the band Swimmer One. His first album, There Are No Maps For This Part Of The City, was described by Drowned in Sound as ‘a heart-breaking beauty of a debut’, and by the Guardian as ‘the kind of record they – the Eitzels and the McAloons – used to make, an adult pop record with heart and brains’. This year he was one of the core creative team behind Whatever Gets You Through The Night, an acclaimed multimedia project featuring almost 30 Scottish writers and musicians. His next album, The Winter of 88, will be a limited edition of 88 handmade copies – each named after one of the first 88 people to preorder it. The names of the 88 will also feature in the lyrics of the title track.

THE STORE KEYS are one of the UK’s most exiting supergroups, built of:
• Stevie Jackson: Belle and Sebastian lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with his first solo album now doing the international rounds
• Roy Moller: Scottish singer-songwriter; with Belle and Sebastian collaboration credits; also a member of Scotland’s other supergroup Jesus, Baby!
• Marco Rea: co-chief in The Wellgreen; Stevie Jackson’s band; Jesus, Baby!; Euros Childs; former The Marbles – the list keeps on going.
• Stu Kid: co-chief in The Wellgreen; also in the mighty Snowgoose; Stevie Jackson’s band; former drummer for BMX Bandits.
• Lorne Cowieson: an elusive percussive genius. That’s all you get to know.

……. The Store Keys will be paying tribute to George Gallacher from THE POETS (Scotland's premier Beat Group of the 1960s). George was scheduled to be playing with them but very sadly he recently passed. The Store Keys recorded a single with George which will be played live and available in a unique run of vinyl. A great testament to a great man.

Taking the night home will be THE SEXUAL OBJECTS – fronted by Davy Henderson (of The Fire Engines, Win and Nectarine No.9 fame) – the SOBs are a BBC Radio 6/Marc Riley favourite and Guardian New Band of the Day. Is Davy Scotland’s answer to David Bowie? We think so! Having recently toured with Primal Scream and Vic Godard, this year also promises a satellite release produced and released by Edwyn Collins’ (Orange Juice).
